Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
