Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Strategies: The Past of Craps
January 29th, 2026 by Kenneth

Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
