Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
