Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
