February 8th, 2025 by Kenneth

Be smart, play brilliant, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
