Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
