Learn to Play Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The Background of Craps
November 17th, 2024 by Kenneth

Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
