Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
