Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
