Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Strategies: The History of Craps
February 17th, 2024 by Kenneth

Be clever, play clever, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
