Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
