Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
