November 9th, 2022 by Kenneth

Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
