Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
