Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
