Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
