Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
