Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
