Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
