Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Background of Craps
March 28th, 2021 by Kenneth

Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
