Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The Background of Craps
January 26th, 2021 by Kenneth

Be smart, play smart, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
