Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
