Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
