Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
