Master Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Background of Craps
August 19th, 2019 by Kenneth

Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
