Become Versed in Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The Background of Craps
July 7th, 2017 by Kenneth

Be clever, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
