Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
