Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win.
