Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
