Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
